In February, the death of ‘Morro’ Santiago García was known, news that shook the entire continent. In the last three weeks the bad news has not stopped in Uruguayan football, as three bodies have been found dead, the most recent that of Maximiliano Castro, a 46-year-old ex-footballer, who played with the national team and retired in 2008.
After what happened with the ‘Morro’ Santiago García, 30, in February, July has shocked with three more suicides. On July 17 it was Williams Martínez, 38, and on July 22, Emiliano Cabrera, 27.
The association of professional soccer players in Uruguay (MUFP) mourned the death of the person who wore the shirt of the Uruguayan National Team and the clubs Rampla Jrs, Maldonado and Central Español, but had also referred in recent days to cases of suicide among soccer players and ex-footballers. Many go into depression because they are without a contract and others because after retirement they wonder what to do.
Diego Scotti, president of the MUFP, told ESPN: “We try to help and generate support networks because the footballer’s career is not for life. Besides, it is a career with many ups and downs, so there are frustrations.”
