Track cyclist Jan-Willem van Schip just misses the medal | Cycling

Van Schip had an excellent start to the omnium, an all-around four-part event. The 26-year-old track cyclist was the first to cross the finish line in the first part, the scratch race. On the cycling track of Izu, five riders, including Van Schip, even took a lap on the rest.

After a tactically very strong race in the tempo race part, the Dutchman took the lead in the standings after two parts, together with Matthew Walls from Great Britain and the Frenchman Benjamin Thomas. All three riders had 76 points after two parts.

After the third part, the elimination race, Van Schip had to give up a place. He eventually finished fourth in the elimination race. The Brit Walls took the lead with 114 points, Van Schip followed with 110 points and so had every chance of a medal after the third part.

However, in the points race it went wrong for the Dutchman and he lost his podium place.

Van Schip, who comes from Schalkwijk, has already won silver twice at the World Championships on the omnium, an all-around four events. After the scratch, the tempo race, the elimination race and the points race follow. Van Schip will also compete in the coupling race with Yoeri Havik on Saturday.

Earlier in the day, Shanne Braspennincx won a gold medal in the keirin event.
