Tom Brady’s Impact on American Sports • First and Ten

Editor’s Note: On the occasion of Tom Brady’s 44th birthday, we recovered this article from a few months ago about his achievements and impact on American sports.

The QB Tom Brady Not only did he surpass his own record of single-player Super Bowls, but he alone has more championships than any NFL franchise. Additionally, he became the oldest person to win an SB at 43 years and 188 days old. With the triumph of the Buccaneers 31-9 over Chiefs in Super Bowl LV, reached seven career titles and was awarded his fifth Super Bowl MVP in his 21st season as a professional and with his second team.

While we know what his impact has been on football and the NFL, now we present to you what it meant to have been a Super Bowl champion with the Buccaneers in the 2020 Season in American sports in general.

Tom Brady vs. the four major sports in USA

Brady became the first player in NFL history to win a championship during four different presidential terms (George Bush, Barack Obama, Donald Trump, and Joe Biden):

  • First to get it among the NFL / NBA / MLB / NHL since Larry Robinson (NHL) got it from Richard Nixon to Ronald Reagan
  • Three NBA players did the same (Bill Russell, Sam Jones, John Havlicek)
  • Six NHL players join him (Cy Denneny, Red Kelly, Serge Savard, Jim Roberts, Yvan Cournoyer, Jacques Lemaire, Larry Robinson)
  • Nobody has done it in MLB

Brady became the first NFL player to win a title in three different decades (2000, 2010, 2020):

  • Two NBA players did it (Tim Duncan, John Salley)
  • Four made it in MLB (Babe Ruth, Joe DiMaggio, Yogi Berra, Jim Palmer)
  • Seven players in the NHL (Mark Recchi most recent)

Brady became the greatest player among NFL / NBA / NHL / MLB to win being named MVP of the championship game and the first to do so in his 40s:

Brady is the sixth player among the four great North American sports to be named MVP of the championship game with two different teams:

  • NBA: LeBron James (Heat, Cavaliers, Lakers), Kareem Abdul-Jabbar (Bucks, Lakers) y Kawhi Leonard (Spurs, Raptors)
  • NHL: Patrick Roy (Canadiens, Avalanche)
  • MLB: Reggie Jackson (Athletics, Yankees)
  • NFL: Tom Brady (Patriots, Buccaneers)
