Tokyo 2020: Carlos Ortiz fell dramatically and was far from the medal for Mexico in Golf

Carlos Ortiz did not perform the best during the last round of the golf tournament in Tokyo 2020 and he could not stay in the first three positions by shooting a +7 on the final day of competition. Its inaccuracies caused it to end in the 42nd place with five shots under par.

The Mexican began his participation in round four of the tournament in the penultimate group along with the Colombian Sebastián Muñoz and the Irish former world number one, Rory Mcllroy.

With a par on hole 3, Ortiz remained in third position with a score of -12, however, he was tied with four other players and the competition closed as they advanced to the middle of the round.

Unfortunately, a bad tee shot by the Mexican on hole four began to complicate the situation. His shot was short, later he did not make a good approach so he had to make two putts. He finished with a bogey and concluded with 11 low shots under par, falling to eighth place in the general table, tied with the other representative of Mexico, Abraham Ancer.

It was until par five of the fifth hole that Ortiz made a birdie with which he recovered a stroke and returned to the score of -12. With this, the native of Guadalajara Jalisco, remained one blow from the fight for the medals occupying the sixth position.

By the 10th hole, Ortiz was already three shots away from bronze, still 12 under par. Positioned in that comment in position nine, the Mexican continued to strive and give everything not to give up, but the scenario looked too complicated.

The Aztec athlete did not find his state of finer form in the blows, the same that had accompanied him in the first three rounds of the contest. On par four of the 12th hole he took a birdie that left him 12 under par in 11th place. The medals were still three shots away.

With four holes remaining to finish his participation in the round, Carlos reached the 15th position with 11 shots under par. Abraham Ancer also did not manage to make a good last round and by that time he had already dropped to 21st place with a score of -10.

All medal hopes collapsed during the 15th hole when Ortiz fell to position 27 after doing a double bogey. This left him with nine shots under par.

To the surprise of all the Mexicans closely following Ortiz, he fell far short of the medal positions despite remaining in the top three in the first three rounds. Finally culminated in 42nd placewhile his compatriot Abraham Ancer moved into position 14 with 12 under par.

Professional since 2013, Carlos Ortiz has participated in 118 PGA Tour competitions. In 2020 he became champion at the Houston Open Golf and won a prize of USD 1.26 million in earnings, along with 500 points for the FedEx Cup. Although he has not consistently excelled at the highest level in world golf, his performance has left some good moments for Mexico.

At 30, the Mexican golfer is in the ranking as number 61 in the world and a result of his placing in medal positions would have been a pleasant surprise for Mexican sports. Although made a great participation during practically the entire tournament, his level fell in the last round, which took him away from the possibility of hanging a medal.
