Tijuanense Gabriela Scloesser Bayardo takes a silver medal in Tokyo 2020 in the women’s archery category – Telemundo San Diego (20)

TOKYO- A Tijuana woman won a silver medal at the Tokyo 2020 Olympic games, although she did not do so under the colors of Mexico. It is about Gabriela Scloesser Bayardo.

On the Olympic podium in the women’s archery category, next to the Dutch flag, the Mexican also slipped.

“I always told my partner look at my two flags, so in this competition there were also both so I really feel super happy about this great achievement that my teammates and I have just won,” said Scloesser Bayardo.

She was born in Tijuana, Baja California, Mexico and represented the Netherlands at Tokyo 2020 after marrying her Dutch husband, Mike Shloesser, in an unexpected turn in her career where she had previously participated in Rio 2016 for the Mexican federation.

“At that time my boyfriend and I met in a competition in Mexico and you have to realize we fell in love, so we decided to move together to Holland,” he said.

And the Aztec federation did not give him the opportunity to continue representing Mexico and he opted for another destination.

“I spoke with the federation here in the Netherlands, they supported me from the beginning that I was welcome,” he said.

But the road was not easy, and without thinking about the flag she carries or whether it is Mexican or Dutch, she said she only looks ahead.

“Even though I now represent another country, my heart still represents Mexico, and many think whether or not I am Mexican anymore, but the truth is that I want to put in context I am Gabriela, I am the one who gets up every day regardless of What country it is, what nationality it is, and the truth is, the flag is not only worn on the uniform but also in the heart, ”he said.

And she added that part of her heart also continues to feel her Tijuana roots, which she said are always present with her.

“I’m super happy that a person like me can make history being from a place like Tijuana because sometimes the only thing you hear about Tijuana is bad things, but we also see a lot of people from Tijuana who are successful,” he said.
