GIESSEN – The Gießen 46ers grab the wildcard and want to stay in the Basektball Bundesliga. After the sporting descent of the 46ers, the club officials and the shareholders decided to apply to the BBL to stay in the upper house. The application deadline for the clubs is next Thursday. After examining the applications received, the shareholders’ meeting of the BBL will decide whether the traditional club will receive the right to participate in its 54th season in the 1st division.

The managing partner Stephan Dehler says about the decision: “The shareholders of the 46ers are making an additional 700,000 euros available for participation in the wildcard procedure. That is a very strong sign of solidarity to our fans, our sponsors and the region. After intensive Discussions were clear: We want the wildcard and that is why we voted in favor of this application for the wildcard, because the funds promised within a few hours will not burden the total budget. As a traditional location and founding member of the BBL, we want to continue to play in the first division and experience exciting evenings in the Gießener Osthölle. We will now also convince all other BBL clubs with passion. ”

Heidelberg questionable

The wildcard procedure became necessary because with MLP Heidelberg only one athletic climber from the ProA has been determined. The license league committee has already approved the license application unconditionally. The clubs have now agreed on an adapted wildcard procedure for the 2021/22 season, which extends the associated fee of 700,000 euros to two equal parts of 350,000 euros each over two years. A special feature of this regulation is that the second tranche is only due in the event of relegation, thus reducing the financial risk a little in these economically difficult times during the corona pandemic.

In the case of Heidelberg, too, clarity still needs to be created. The people of Baden-Württemberg only received the license subject to certain conditions. If these are not met, a second wildcard procedure could be initiated on June 30th.
