the Frenchman Jean Quiquampoix, the man with the golden pistol – Liberation

Tokyo Olympic Games 2021dossier

Olympic runner-up five years ago in Rio, the Frenchman converted silver into gold in the “rapid fire” final.

Jean Quiquampoix won the title of Olympic champion in the 25m rapid fire pistol at the Tokyo Games on Monday. Vice-Olympic champion in Rio in 2016, he offered the French delegation its sixth gold medal, the 22nd overall, since the opening of the Olympic Games in Japan.

At the Asaka shooting range, northwest of Tokyo, the 25-year-old Frenchman took revenge on German Christian Reitz, who had beaten him in Rio. China’s Yuehong Li, bronze medalist in Rio, and Cuban Leuris Pupo, Olympic champion in London in 2012, also qualified for the final.

In this event of “Olympic speed”, the shooters must release, in four seconds maximum, series of five shots to reach the center of five juxtaposed targets. At the end of the first four rounds, the fencer with the lowest score will be eliminated, and so on until the nomination of the Olympic champion.
