Enthusiastic Union not rewarded, Undav goal rejected

After Union’s victory in the Brussels derby, Club Brugge knew what to expect, but blue-black was also surprised by the enthusiasm of the PhD student. Already after 5 minutes Vanzeir had the 1-0 at the foot, he placed the ball narrowly wide.

And it didn’t stop there. While Club barely got a chance to play football together, the threat from Union came from all sides, with attempts by Lynen, Undav and Teuma. Simon Mignolet, again in goal after his injury at the European Championship, had to organize his defense.

Ten minutes before the break, Deniz Undav seemed to cash in on the home team’s dominance with a great shot into the square, but the German was narrowly offside.

Only at the end of the first half did Club show some signs of improvement. Union goalkeeper Moris was put to work for the first time five minutes before half time when Vormer and Rits tried.

Vormer slips on corner kick, goal kick for Union:

Sobol saves Club Brugge from new loss of points

Philippe Clement tinkered with his team during halftime and brought Sobol into the squad for Dost, making De Ketelaere the deepest man at Club. He was brought into position twice early in the second half, but kicked both chances into the side net.

At Union, the fat had run out of soup in the meantime. The inhabitants of Brussels had used up a lot of energy in the first half and did not reach the same level after the break. At Club the level of the game went up slightly, but not enough to really hurt Union.

The home team squeezed out one last offensive in the final phase, with two good chances for Vanzeir, but immediately afterwards got a cold shower. A warded corner from Bruges was nailed to the ropes by Sobol in one go: 0-1 for Club.

Club Brugge kept the lead and can thus add its first three-pointer, a deserving Union is left empty-handed.

Trebel spotted in the stands during Union – Club Brugge:

Clement: “Good lesson for the coming months”

“The second half was the opposite: it was for us. So that is a match that would end in a draw, if the rules were like that. So in that respect it is a flattered victory, because we do score that goal and she didn’t. It might as well have been the other way around.”

“If you don’t win the duels, if they can play between the lines every time and we react too late, then you will get into trouble. That is the basis. I also said that in the dressing room: first win the duels, and after that you can come to good football. Not the other way around. That has been a good lesson for the following months.”

  • Dante Vanzeir (Union): “We had analyzed Club Brugge well. We looked at where their weaknesses lie and where they give away space. And that is on the flanks, with wing changes and space in the back, which we found very good in the first half.”

“We also had a few big chances, including myself, who had to go in and who normally go in, but today it was just not easy for us. We created a lot of opportunities, but there was not enough efficiency.”
