A splendid performance on the mound by Raul Rivero and an unforgivable defensive error forced Parma Clima to raise the white flag on the Bologna pitch. The hosts won with the result of 8 to 1 at the end of a match dominated for six rounds by the Venezuelan champion. Now mathematics also rewards the current Italian champions who from this evening have the certainty of taking part in the Italian Baseball Series.
Compared to the first meeting, the hosts’ technical staff included Agretti in third base and Grimaudo on the left outside in the initial nine. Martini was deployed as a designated hitter with right fielder Loardi. Initially on the bench Dobboletta and Bertossi.
In Parma Clima the coach Guido Poma confirmed the same defensive formation of “race one” by advancing Paolini to the second spot in the batting order and bringing Battioni down to seventh: once again Sebastiano Poma and the receivers Mineo and Monello stopped in the pits. The Venezuelan challenge between the Bolognese Rivero and the Parmesan Rondon was staged on the mound.
The game began in the name of the pitchers, both good at closing the first inning facing only three batters each: the first player to reach the base was Sambucci, finished strikeout but saved in first due to a missed ball in the first part of the second take.
Rondon also put in five consecutive outs before throwing four balls at Loardi’s address: the next hitter, Liberatore, hit a long foul fly but then struck out.
The first valid came to the third, author Juaquin who guessed the corridor between first and second base: Rivero tried to eliminate him with a pickoff but his shot was lost on the right outside allowing him to advance to third. Parma Clima thus had the first chance of the evening but Desimoni was eliminated at the plate while Paolini fielded a “comebacker” that Rivero transformed in the third out.
At the change of field Grimaudo also created an opportunity for the hosts who did not let it slip away, helped by a macroscopic mistake by the ducal defense. After replacing the injured Grimaudo with Bertossi, Dreni hit a double in the center and then Van Gurp fielded a ball comfortably picked up by Rondon: the Parma Clima pitcher caught Bertossi in a trap between third and home base but then he missed an elementary grip of the ball on Rodriguez’s home base assistance, giving Bologna two very avoidable points. Shortly afterwards the 3-0 took place with Van Gurp pushed to home plate by a diamond serve by Agretti and by a sacrificial sprint by Martini.
The change of Rondon with Rivera did not have the desired effects. The ducal relief entered the field at the fifth round and immediately collected the four points that closed the match: Van Gurp beat a single inside, Martini and Marval produced two consecutive doubles and Leonora put her own seal on the meeting with a home run from two points in the center.
On the other hand, the attack of the European champions suffered the throws of Rivero who scored eleven eliminations at the pot in six rounds and who in the fifth performed in a “perfect inning” eliminating at the plate with only nine pitches. Sambucci, Battioni and Accountants.
The substitution of the excellent Rivero with Palumbo and Zotti allowed the Parma Clima hitters to obtain better contacts and to score a point in the seventh inning using a double in the center of Sambucci.
The last point of the game was scored by the hosts in the eighth inning against Francesco Pomponi, author of two crazy pitches and hit by a single from Loardi.
