Skateboarding premiered in Tokyo under five circles and all three previous competitions were dominated by Japanese riders. In the men’s park, however, the only home representative, Ajumu Hirano, was eliminated in the semifinals.

Palmer won the gold, which received 95.83 points out of a possible 100 for his ride from the judges. Brazilian Pedro Barros finished second (81.4) and American Cory Juneau (84.13) was third.
