Anyone who wins gold in the decathlon is crowned the king of track and field athletes. After world champion Niklas Kaul had to retire injured, the way was free for Damian Warner. The Canadian achieved a rare achievement.
Dhe Canadian Damian Warner is an Olympic champion in the decathlon. The 31-year-old won the gold medal on Thursday evening in Tokyo with an Olympic record of 9018 points. More than 9000 points – that was only achieved by three decathletes, in 2018 the French Kevin Mayer (9126), in 2015 and 2012 the American Ashton Eaton (9045 and 9039) and in 2001 the Czech Roman Sebrle (9026).
World record holder Mayer ended up in second place after the final 1500 meter run, as he did five years ago in Rio de Janeiro (8726). The Australian Ashley Moloney (8649) won bronze after two days of competition. Eaton won Olympic gold in London in 2012 and in Rio in 2016.
As the best German, Kai Kazmirek from LG Rhein-Wied came 14th with 8126 points. “The common thread was missing. From the beginning to the end. Which surprised me a bit, because the training performance was fantastic, ”said Kazmirek afterwards.
Medal favorite Niklas Kaul from Mainz had to give up on his Olympic debut on Wednesday in the 400 meter race due to a foot injury. Kaul became world champion in 2019 with 8691 points.
Heptathlete Schäfer is seventh – gold for Thiam
“I think he’ll be able to start training again in six to seven weeks. Mentally he is of course very bad. He had imagined his first Olympic Games differently. Fortunately, he is still young and has several chances. It’s not too late, ”said Kazmirek to his team-mate Kaul.

The Frankfurt heptathlete Carolin Schäfer came in seventh after the final 800-meter run with 6419 points. Five years ago in Rio, she made it to fifth place. Vanessa Grimm from Königstein im Taunus had to be content with position 19 for 6114 points.
