World record holder Mayer ended up in second place after the final 1500 meter run, as he did five years ago in Rio de Janeiro (8726). The Australian Ashley Moloney (8649) won bronze after two days of competition. Eaton won Olympic gold in London in 2012 and in Rio in 2016.
