Nurul Akmal Wants the Body Shaming Case to End

Jakarta, CNN Indonesia —

Women’s +87kg weightlifter Tokyo 2020 Olympics, Nurul Akmal, hope that the case of alleged body shaming or physical abuse that befell him will end soon.

From the beginning, he was relaxed about the events that occurred when he arrived at Soekarno Hatta Airport, now Nurul Akmal is feeling depressed. The conversation about this case is getting more and more crowded on social media and has become a hot debate for a number of people.

This lifter, who was born in Aceh, February 12, 1993, felt uncomfortable. His psychology during the self-quarantine period after returning from Japan became unpleasant. Nurul Akmal hopes that the public will end the polemic about the physical abuse.

“Honestly if it’s been discussed continuously like now, Amel [sapaan akrab Nurul Akmal] so uncomfortable and disturbed because it was too excited,” said Nurul Akmal in the release of the Indonesian Olympic Committee received by CNNIndonesia.com, Saturday (7/8).

“Amel wants to undergo quarantine in peace and wants to focus on preparing himself to train harder and harder, considering that there will be many international championships and multi-events that Amel will also participate in,” he said.

The chairman of KOI Raja Sapta Oktohari also raised his voice. The king asked all parties to create a conducive and positive environment for athletes, including Nurul Akmal. The king is worried that this will be a negative energy for athletes and society.

“I just called Amel [Jumat, 6/8], he is in good health. However, he admitted that he was quite disturbed by the recent news,” said the man who is familiarly called Okto, who is currently still in Tokyo.

It is known that Nurul Akmal has become a hot topic on social media because someone called him ‘the thinnest’ when welcoming the Indonesian contingent at Soekarno-Hatta Airport, last Thursday (5/8). Unexpectedly, this sparked public emotion even though the perpetrator of the physical abuse was not yet known.

Continuing Nurul Akmal’s hopes, the KOI hopes the public will end this commotion.

“Amel has a very open soul. He considers the words a joke and forgives the words of the person. He asked not to exaggerate, so let’s all stop it,” said the King.

“This incident is a lesson for all of us not to underestimate other people, in any form. Especially if that person doesn’t know and doesn’t know how Amel struggles,” said the man who also works as a boxing promoter.

When appearing in the Tokyo 2020 Olympic weightlifting heavyweight, Nurul Akmal was ranked fifth. He posted a total lift of 256kg, consisting of a snatch of 115kg and a clean and jerk of 141kg.
