The New England Patriots have released veteran quarterback Cam Newton and named rookie Mac Jones as a starter, multiple US media reported Tuesday morning.
Newton started Sunday’s preseason game and played two offensive series with the starters. Jones, who was claimed 15th in the last draft, then came in until late in the third quarter and especially evolved in the company of substitutes.
Newton, who completed two of his five passing attempts for ten yards with an interception, had not answered questions from reporters after the game. He had also not spoken to them since missing three training sessions for “misinterpreting” the COVID-19 protocol.
Jones, meanwhile, completed 36 of his 52 passes for 389 yards with one touchdown and no interceptions during the preseason. He was however the victim of four sacks on Sunday after suffering only one in his two previous meetings.
