Neither money nor projects, the Gorizia Gymnastics Union at a crossroads: “So the season can’t restart”

The appeal of President Comolli: “Costs arrears in the Covid era to pay, the city give us a hand”

GORIZIA Covid or not Covid, more or less permissive restrictions, in any case risks not being able to start, not being able to do so, the new sporting season of the Gorizia Gymnastics Union. That in the heart of the summer break, and looking at that month of September which has always marked the moment of the restart of the activities, launches a new cry of alarm and puts a serious reflection on the city. The problem is twofold, on the one hand long-standing and on the other more recent, also linked to the developments in the panorama of Gorizia and Isonzo sports that have matured in recent years, including those of Covid. In the first case we are talking about economic resources really reduced to the bone and suffering accounts. This is not new. In the second of roles and spaces that Ugg struggles to find today.

«Let’s start from an observation, without turning around: at the moment we don’t know if and how we will be able to start again in the new sporting season – explains the president of Ugg Paolo Comolli -. After the general stop for lockdown and the pandemic, we have in fact still remained blocked and stopped, also due to a whole series of backward costs that have accrued precisely in this period in which evidently the incoming cash flows have been canceled by Covid. We continued with the activity of the fencing section, did some lessons and courses in telematic mode, and practically nothing else ».

The pandemic ended up giving yet another very hard blow to a company that, in the recent past, if nothing else, had to play the not secondary card of the structure (and what structure, for prestige, history, size and flexibility) of ownership, while in this year and a half marked by Covid it would have been very convenient to have rather external areas to carry out the activities. Areas that the Ugg does not have. Of the historical active sections in via Rismondo, essentially, the aforementioned fencing now survives – which, moreover, is also capable of giving great satisfaction, given the quality of athletes and technical staff -, judo, rhythmic gymnastics and fitness , with courses that also interest adults. Basketball, the flagship of the Ugg for a lifetime, now seems to have vanished, and the company has also had to renounce the prohibitive management of the Valletta del Corno skating facility, which has returned to the Municipality. What would it take, then? First of all, economic resources, and this is why Comolli launches an appeal “to those who can and who wants to lend a hand to the Gorizia Gymnastics Union and has its future at heart, be they private individuals or institutions”, while stressing that all this is not enough: «We also need a sports project, because otherwise the risk is simply that of consuming without perspective any money that we could possibly get – says the president -. We can also have ideas, desire and enthusiasm are not lacking, but every project must be placed within the reality in which we live ». This is why the other request from Comolli and Ugg is even more important and is addressed to institutions (from the Municipality to Coni, why not) and to other sports associations. “In my opinion it would be useful to open a discussion table between sports associations – he explains -, to understand which spaces and which niches each one can occupy and cultivate, without stepping on their toes and trying to coexist, perhaps also to the advantage of the offer for the city “. The proposal is there, the stone is thrown into the pond. What begins to run out is time, we need to hurry. –
