Both Jalen Green and Jalen Suggs have to leave the field due to injuries in the Summer League. Franz Wagner remains pale again. Nets rookie Cam Thomas and Spurs guard Tre Jones crown their strong performances with a game winner each.
Boston Celtics (3-0) – Orlando Magic (1-2) 108:71
Points: Sam Hauser (21) – Tahjere McCall (12)
Rebounds: Aaron Nesmith (9) – Jon Teske and Asbjorn Midtgaard (4)
Assists: Payton Pritchard (9) – Tahj Eaddy (3)
An absolutely used evening for the Orlando Magic. In the second quarter, Jalen Suggs had to leave the game due to an injury, problems with the left hand prevented the 5th pick of the 2021 draft from returning to the floor. An exact diagnosis and its status for the upcoming games are still open.
In his limited minutes, the 20-year-old scored 6 points, but without Suggs, there was hardly anything at Magic. Orlando hit a weak 27/73 from the field (37 percent) and went completely under. Tahjere McCall (12) was the only player with a double-digit number of points.
Franz Wagner (4 points and 3 rebounds, 2/5 FG and 0/3 threesomes) also remained rather pale, but only played 13 minutes. Due to the blowout, which had already been indicated in the first half, most of the Magic starters were spared in the second half.
Boston, on the other hand, was almost playing itself into a frenzy. The 41 successful field goals (in 75 attempts, 54.7 percent) were preceded by 33 assists. Sam Hauser was the most successful points collector with 21 points, but Payton Pritchard (17 and 9 assists, 4/6 threesomes) and Aaron Nesmith (18 and 9 rebounds) also performed well.
Toronto Raptors (2-1) – Houston Rockets (2-1) 92:76
Points: Ish Wainright (20) – Josh Christopher (14)
Rebounds: Jalen Adams (8) – Alperen Sengun (10)
Assists: Malachi Flynn and Scottie Barnes (3) – Josh Christopher and Alperen Sengün (3)
There was also no particularly good news from the Rockets’ camp. Jalen Green was on the way to another impressive appearance before problems on the right thigh slipped between them. The number 2 pick put up 13 points (3/5 threesomes) in 12 minutes, and could now, according to Chris Haynes (Yahoo Sports) but suspend the rest of the Summer League.
Tim MacMahon (ESPN) added that Houston believed the injury wasn’t serious. Without Green, Josh Christopher tried to step into the breach as a scorer, but needed 18 throws for his 14 points (4 hits, 1/9 threesome). Alperen Sengün also had problems finishing (9 and 10 rebounds. 3/10 FG).
Toronto, led by Ish Wainright (20, 7/12 FG) and Precious Achiuwa (19, 8/11 FG), had a relatively easy game in the end. No.4 pick Scottie Barnes held back a little offensively (8, 2/7 FG), but filled the statsheet with 4 rebounds, 3 assists, 1 steal and 5 blocks and impressed again with his defense.
Brooklyn Nets (2-1) – Washington Wizards (0-2) 84:81 2OT
Points: Cam Thomas (31) – Jaime Echenique (17)
Rebounds: Day’Ron Sharpe (12) – Jay Huff (8)
Assists: David Duke Jr. und Day’Ron Sharpe (3) – Xavier Rathan-Mayes (9)
It was Cam Thomas who made his mark on the game. The first round pick of the Nets (# 27) was not only the top scorer of his team with 31 points (10/23 FG), he was also there in crunchtime. Only 6 seconds before the end of the first overtime he sank a three from the left wing to equalize, which secured the second extension.
The 19-year-old struck again in sudden death mode. With the shot clock running out, he sent a one-legged threesome from the barrel on the trip – Game winner! The best man in the Wizards was Jaime Echenique, who scored 17 points.
Charlotte Hornets (0-3) – San Antonio Spurs (1-2) 105:106
Points: James Bouknight (23) – Tre Jones (34)
Rebounds: Vernon Carey Jr. (8) – Tre Jones (8)
Assists: James Bouknight (8) – Tre Jones (9)
Speaking of game winners. With only 5 seconds left to play and one counter behind Tre Jones attacked the Hornets’ basket. Despite a good defense, he somehow managed to get the ball into the basket and gave the Spurs the victory.
It was the culmination of a strong performance with 34 points (12/20 FG), 9 assists and 8 rebounds (with 7 turnover). On the other hand, number 11 pick James Bouknight held against it with 23 points and 8 assists.
