National team: Benedikt Höwedes becomes DFB team manager

According to a report by “Sport Bild”, world champion Benedikt Höwedes is returning to the DFB as a team manager. Until the 2022 World Cup, the ex-Schalke should act as a link between the team and decision-makers.

Benedikt Höwedes is the new team manager at the DFB. At least that’s what the “Sport Bild” reports. Accordingly, the 2014 world champion is currently undergoing management training within the association. According to the report, he will act as a link between the national team and the decision-makers until the 2022 World Cup. The “Sport Bild” even speculates that DFB director Oliver Bierhoff will build Höwedes as his successor. Bierhoff’s contract ends in summer 2024.

Parallel to the post at the DFB, Höwedes also started a management course at the European football association Uefa in October. For the long-time captain of the Bundesliga relegated FC Schalke 04, these are the first steps in the football business after the end of his professional playing career. The 33-year-old finished his soccer boots in the summer of 2020 after two years with the Russian first division club Lokomotiv Moscow.
