The country’s best mountain bikers in the marathon were selected for the first time outside the series of the two biggest competition series. On Sunday, more than 300 large and small cyclists gathered in Kūku Parish, Jēkabpils Region, where the first “VeloExpress” Latvian Open Championship in the MTB Marathon took place.

The creator of the competition track Dainis Skrūzmanis and his team from “Līvāni cycling club” had taken care of one of the most technically complex and interesting marathon tracks in Latvia. This was also very much welcomed by all participants. The total number of height meters in the marathon distance exceeded 1200 meters. The first part of the route was especially rich in ascents, while the long rains had made certain sections of the route muddy.

The fastest were determined in a total of 17 age and skill groups. In addition, several groups also fought for medals in the Cake MTB Marathon. It is interesting that a separate start in both the marathon and half marathon distance was provided for women and Open class riders.

Elite, U23, CFA and the youngest master group athletes, as well as elite ladies competed for the championship titles in the 68-kilometer-long marathon distance. At the very beginning of the track, the Latvian champion Oskars Muižnieks from “DTG – MySport” won the lead for the last three years. During the distance, the fiercest competition for Oscars was shown by “Dobeles dzirnavnieks / FeelFree” cyclist Māris Bogdanovičs, who was about one minute behind Muižnieks after the first lap. Next, Oscar only increased his pace, without much doubt about the fate of the winner.

The rider reached the finish line “DTG – MySport” in proud loneliness, celebrating the fourth title in a row. Māris Bogdanovičs lost a little more than two to Muižnieks, who finished second, while Lauris Purniņš (“DTG – MySport”) finished the top three. He was separated from the winner for more than six minutes. In this order, the podium was also divided into an elite group.
