Miguel Cabrera accomplished the feat of hitting his 500th home run in major league baseball on Sunday, which he considers very special.

To add icing on the cake, the strike tied the score against the Toronto Blue Jays and was a turning point in the Detroit Tigers’ 5-3 win in a duel that reached the 11th inning.

“There were a lot of things going through my mind,” ‘Miggy’ described on video conference. I wanted to do it in Detroit, but it’s hard to hit home runs there. When I touched it, I said to myself: ‘come on! Upper! Higher! ” Glad I made it here [au Rogers Center] because if it had been at Comerica Park [le domicile des Tigers], the result would have been two players withdrawn. It is something special for my country and my family. I am really happy.”

“It was a good time to do it,” he added, via MLB.com, as we were trying to win the series. “

By the way, the first thing Cabrera said after sending the ball to the spectators was “Come on!”. He didn’t want his accomplishment to be a balm on a loss on a trip.

Jays starter Steven Matz, who threw the offering to the 28th player and the first Venezuelan in majors history to hit 500 long balls, came back on that shot after the game.

“I threw a shifting ball that wasn’t even a grip,” he revealed. She was rather far outside. ”

Elsewhere in the league

A few days earlier, Cabrera had almost achieved the feat against the Los Angeles Angels of Shohei Ohtani, the Japanese player who dominates the Manfred circuit with 40 long balls this season.

“He’s obviously a great hitter and one of the best of all time,” said Ohtani, after his team and the first baseman’s game last Wednesday. He’s also a great person when it comes to him. He is respected in the world of baseball and it would have been okay for me to give him his 500th home run. I hope it will happen soon. ”

Tigers president Christopher Ilitch also delivered his congratulations in a press release.

“As the first player to hit 500 home runs in the Tigers’ organization in 121 years of history, we are excited, proud and delighted to join Miguel Cabrera in celebrating this historic moment.”

Cabrera is the first player to slam 500 balls under other skies since David Ortiz did so in 2015, and the first Tigers member to pull it off. He is also the sixth athlete born outside the United States to do so.
