India wins bronze against Germany (5-4) and returns to the podium 41 years later

The Indian hockey team got this Thursday the bronze medal at the Tokyo Games after defeating Germany 5-4, a result that allows him to return to the Olympic podium after 41 years.

India, the most awarded team in the history of the Games with eight golds achieved until Moscow 1980, prevailed in a highly contested match in which the performance of its goalkeeper, Sreejesh Parattu Raveendran, was decisive, who six seconds from the end saved a corner penalty that could have led to a draw.

The team led by Australian Graham Reid came back from an adverse score of 1-3 to reach the halftime with a tie at 3, get ahead in the third quarter (5-3) and do it again to prevail in the last.

The victory of India, whose women’s team will also play tomorrow for being bronze against Great Britain, prevented Germany from achieving its fourth consecutive metal in a Games – it was gold in Beijing 2008 and London 2012 and bronze in Rio 2016-.
