Hornets fail to hold Malik Monk | NBA

Talented but inconsistent scorer, Malik Monk mostly has defensive limits that have taken him out of James Borrego’s rotation several times. It is therefore not entirely surprising that the Hornets did not offer him a « qualifying offer », which means that he becomes an unprotected free agent and that Charlotte will not be able to match the external offers that will be made to him during the “free agency”.

With LaMelo Ball, Gordon Hayward, Terry Rozier and rookie James Bouknight already capable of playing at the back, there probably weren’t enough minutes left for Malik Monk anyway.

Note, however, that the Hornets offered a « qualifying offer » to Devonte ‘Graham to protect him.

Qualifying offer : proposal made by a franchise to one of its rookies during his last year of contract. Based on his former salary, this offer matches any offer made to the player by another franchise. If the player does not return to his team in the year of qualifying offer, he is automatically free next season, and his team will then not be able to match an offer.
