Historic triumph: Zverev Olympic champion in tennis

Tennis professional Alexander Zverev can decorate himself with the Olympic gold medal: The Hamburg-based man won the final in Tokyo 6: 3, 6: 1 against Karen Khachanov from Russia. Zverev didn’t even need an hour and a half for a smooth victory.

Olympic gold in singles for a German tennis player – that was never before Zverev. The only German men’s medal to date was won by Tommy Haas with silver at the Sydney Games in 2000.

Semi-final victory against world number one Djokovic

On the way to the final, Zverev eliminated, among other things, world number one Novak Djokovic. Djokovic then missed a medal in the bronze game against the Spaniard Pablo Carreno Busta.

Zverev like Steffi Graf, Boris Becker and Michael Stich

The German Tennis Association has so far celebrated gold twice at the Olympic Games. Steffi Graf won the Olympic gold medal in the women in 1988, while Boris Becker and Michael Stich triumphed in the men’s doubles in 1992.

In addition, tennis was several times a demonstration competition at summer games. In 1968 Helga Masthoff won the singles, in 1984 Steffi Graf. Masthoff also won the doubles competition alongside Edda Buding in 1968.
