Golfer Xander Sc Chaudele wins Olympic gold

A leader after the first three rounds, ScHotele continued to show consistency on the fourth round and won with a blow over Slovakian Rory Sabbatini.

An overtime to seven golfers was necessary to determine the bronze medal winner. After four more holes, the Chinese Taipei CT Pan emerged from the competition to reach the third step of the podium.

Just as he appeared to be losing his grip on Olympic gold, the 27-year-old American responded with two crucial putts.

Sc Chaudele first put down a putt of just under two yards on the 17th hole to go down to -18. He then scored a par in the 18th to confirm his victory.

I’m just in shock, he said. I was trying so hard to stay calm, but it was stressful. When I pulled my putt a huge weight off my shoulders, I was very relieved and happy.

The tension was to be cut with a knife on the course of the golf club Kasumigaseki. When the last group marched to the 18th pennant, nine players were still in the hunt for a medal.

One of these was the Japanese Hideki Matsuyama, recent champion at the Masters Tournament. He was one shot behind when he missed a putt of just under a yard for a par at the 15th pennant. He then missed a birdie attempt in the 18th for the bronze medal.

Matsuyama then left the course without a medal after bugging on the first extra hole.

On the fourth overtime hole, Pan clocked a par and at the same time edged out American Collin Morikawa to win the bronze medal.

Sabbatini for his part finished the final round with a spectacular score of 61, an Olympic record. He managed 10 birdies and 1 eagle to complete his tournament.

Canadian Corey Conners signed a 65 and took 13th place alone, just two nods and five behind Scheatele.

I would have liked to have had a few more birdies on the first nine. I did a nice birdie on the ninth pennant and it gave me pace for the back nine.

Ontarian Mackenzie Hughes struggled and handed in an ultimate card of 75. He fell 33 places to finish in 50th place.

It’s bad. I’ve been bad all day, and it’s very disappointing, Hughes observed. That’s all I can say.

Ontarians Brooke Henderson and Alena Sharp will represent Canada at the golf tournament which begins on Wednesday.
