Dream day for Italy (nd current)

Tokyo. After Usain Bolt’s years of triumph, the Italian Lamont Marcell Jacobs sensationally won gold at the Olympic Games in Tokyo over 100 meters. On Sunday, Jacobs relegated the Americans Fred Kerley (9.84) and Andre de Grasse from Canada (9.89) to second and third with a new European record of 9.80 seconds.

Final without Jamaica

Bolt had been the Olympics poster boy for a long time. The showman from Jamaica won gold over the 100 and 200 meters in Beijing in 2008, in London in 2012 and in Rio in 2016. After the end of his career in 2017, it was now about the successor. And for the first time since 2000, there was even no Jamaican in the Olympic final over the 100 meters. Trayvon Bromell, who was chosen by Bolt as a gold favorite, did not experience this crazy showdown as a participant on the shimmering night of Tokyo. “Bromell is extremely promising,” the long-time athletic figure had said about the 26-year-old. But the American is not leading the new era. Bromell missed the final – by a thousandth of a second. In his semifinals he was third behind the simultaneous Enoch Adegoke with 10.00 seconds. But the Nigerian was finally stopped after the evaluation with 9.995 seconds. Initially, only hundredths of a second are shown in the result log – but you can also see distances in the thousandths of a second on the target film.

A huge disappointment for Bromell, who only sprinted the seventh fastest time in history in 9.77 seconds in June, but had to shake his way through the run. And it wasn’t enough for Jamaican Yohan Blake, who used to be Bolt’s competitor himself. The winner of the silver over the 100 meters in London 2012 and former world champion was eliminated in the semifinals without a chance.

The Chinese Su Bingtian surprisingly turned out to be the top man in the semi-finals ahead of Ronnie Baker from the USA (both 9.83 seconds). Su Bingtian thus set a new Asian record. Then came the finale – time to hold your breath! And even if the surprise man Jacobs could not be caught in the sprint final, he does not come close to entertainer and exceptional athlete Bolt. “Nobody will follow in Bolt’s footsteps right away,” said World Federation President Sebastian Coe earlier.

Double high jump gold

Just minutes before Jacobs Olympic victory, his compatriot Gianmarco Tamberi had won gold in the high jump. The two athletes fell into each other’s arms after Jacobs crossed the finish line. But not only Tamberi won gold in the high jump, but also Essa Mutaz Barshim from Qatar. Barshim and Tamberi both jumped 2.37 meters and had the same number of failed attempts. Instead of going into the jump-off, both agreed on a common victory, the judges agreed. Third was Maksim Nedasekau from Belarus, who also managed 2.37 meters.

Another highlight was the triple jumper Yulimar Rojas. With the new world record distance of 15.67 meters, she won the first Olympic gold in athletics for Venezuela – and her compatriots could still cheer in front of the television. The TV signal was only activated shortly before the start of the games after the USA had previously blocked the last installment payment to the marketers due to economic sanctions. nd / agencies
