Tennis superstar Novak Djokovic goes home without an individual Olympic medal. The Serb missed bronze and was uncomfortably noticeable several times in the medal game.
Djokovic doesn’t even get the “consolation prize” bronze at the Olympics. The Serb lost the medal game against the Spaniard Pablo Carreno Busta 4: 6, 7: 6 and 3: 6.
Djokovic looked annoyed throughout the game, sniffing at the ball jacks over and over again. It wasn’t all happening fast enough for him. Carreno Busta took the first set 6: 4 from the Serbian, which didn’t necessarily add to the good mood of the “Djoker”.
In the second set, the number one in the world tormented himself over the tie-break in a decisive set against the Spaniard, fended off a match point. Djokovic even complained that he was blinded by the low sun.
Djokovic is frustrated
Djokovic’s level of frustration got worse and worse, also because he ran after an early 3-0 deficit in the third set. The Serb smashed his bat, received a warning.
The Spaniard seized the opportunity and stayed cool, after a 2:46 hour crime thriller Carreno Busta was confirmed 6: 3 as the bronze medalist.
No golden slam
Djokovic was out for the “Golden Slam” and wanted Olympic gold in 2021 in addition to all Grand Slam tournaments. The German Alexander Zverev thwarted this dream in the semifinals.
So the Serb had to play for third place against Carreno Busta, the Spaniard snatched the precious metal away from the world’s number one in three sets.
In the mixed competition, Djokovic still has the chance of bronze together with Nina Stojanovic.
