CM – Daniel Brito suffers medical emergency on the pitch, Rochester Red Wings game postponed

Saturday night’s double schedule between the Rochester Red Wings and Lehigh Valley Iron Pigs was postponed until the end of the first inning of Game 1 due to a medical emergency.

Iron Pigs third baseman Daniel Brito apparently suffered some sort of seizure and nearly fell into the grass before Red Wings manager Matt LeCroy – who was coaching in the third base zone – had it. caught up. Iron Pigs manager Gary Jones ran onto the pitch and they each got to guide Brito to the ground.

Brito was on the ground for about 20 minutes and a paramedic administered oxygen before an ambulance arrived and Brito was transported to a local hospital. A source has learned that Brito’s left side of body is numb, although nothing conclusive about his condition has been reported.

Once the ambulance left, LeCroy and Jones consulted with the refereeing team, then Red Wings general manager Dan Mason was called and he contacted Major League Baseball – which now manages the minor leagues. – to decide to continue playing. After almost an hour of delay, the decision was made to postpone the match.

The Philadelphia Phillies, the parent club of Lehigh Valley, said Brito collapsed on the pitch and was undergoing surgery at a Rochester hospital in a team statement on Saturday night.

The teams were playing a double schedule because Thursday’s game had been rained. Their series is scheduled to end Sunday afternoon at 1 p.m. match, and they may play a double schedule to make up for at least one of Saturday’s postponements. This decision has not been made.

The Red Wings have announced that fans in attendance can redeem their tickets for any game later this season.

Brito had scored early in the first set and was on first goal with two strikeouts when Mickey Moniak scored. Brito was not running on contact like he should have been with two outs and only made it to second base, and Jones was seen shouting at him that he had made a base running error.

Speculation of course, but Brito may already be starting to suffer from some type of symptom.

At the end of the first inning, Rochester’s Ali Castillo shot a single and went on to third on a Jake Noll single. The same Red Wings source said Castillo told him during the delay Brito shared with Castillo that he had a headache.

Brandon Snyder of the Red Wings then had a three-run homerun, and next batter Jakson Reetz hit a ground ball foul along the third base line. It was then that Brito started to waver and LeCroy rushed to his side.

“I was having a conversation with a fan and I looked up and saw Matt holding him, then I saw the coaches come out, so I went out to make sure everything was okay and see how we could help, ”Mason said.

During his long baseball career, Mason said he had never been in a game that was postponed due to a medical emergency on the field.

There was an obvious void in the stadium, and once Mason announced that the match was called, fans applauded the decision, then began to scroll. We knew that players on both sides were shaken by the event.

“I wasn’t at any of the clubs,” Mason said, “but I think not only the players but everyone who was here in the stands keep the young man in our thoughts and prayers. “

Brito, from Venezuela, was signed by the Phillies during the 2014-15 international signing period. The 23-year-old has worked his way through the minor league system and had just reached triple A this season.

He only appeared in eight games and was 8-for-28 (.276) with two homers and eight RBIs. Brito has been a solid infielder, but what kept him out of the major leagues, according to various reports, was his bat.

In six minor league seasons spanning 512 games, he has reached 0.259 with a base percentage of 0.325, 24 homers and 176 RBIs.
