The FIBA AmeriCup, the continent’s most important basketball competition, will hold its 19th edition of the men’s tournament one year after its original date due to the postponement due to the covid-19 pandemic. The tournament returns to Brazil for the first time since 1984, when it was held in São Paulo and FIBA Hall of Famer Oscar Schmidt led the hosts to gold.

Twelve selected will participate, as in 2017: Argentina, Canada, Colombia, United States, Virgin Islands, Mexico, Panama, Puerto Rico, Dominican Republic, Uruguay, Venezuela and the organizer, Brazil.

In 2017, the United States defeated Argentina 81-76 in the final and was crowned champion in the first FIBA AmeriCup held in three countries: Argentina, Colombia and Uruguay. The last time a local team was champion: Argentina, in Mar del Plata 2011.

“It is an honor and a privilege to return to Brazil to play the FIBA AmeriCup 2022. FIBA and the CBB (Brazilian Basketball Confederation) have been working together for a long time and now have a very structured and inspiring plan to bring this event to Brazil.” said the executive director of FIBA in the Americas, Carlos Alves.
