Badminton: No round of 16 for Leverdez – Summer Games

Opposed to world number 8 Zii Jia Lee, Brice Leverdez lost in two sets and left the Olympic tournament in the group stage.

Brice Leverdez was no match for this. For his second and last group match, qualifier for the knockout stages of the Olympic tournament, the 36th player in the world lost to Zii Jia Lee, current number 8 in the BWF rankings. However, the Frenchman started the match very well, leading the race and taking a three-point lead very early on. It was then that the Malaysian, seeded number 9 in the tournament, placed a lightning acceleration. Aligning ten consecutive points and even signing a 14-1, Zii Jia Lee soared to the score. But, not abdicating, Brice Leverdez gradually made up part of his delay but it was far too late to completely reverse the trend and the Habs conceded this first set for four points.

Lee without mercy for Leverdez

After this first round finally hooked, Brice Leverdez could legitimately believe in an achievement, leveling off with Zii Jia Lee on the first four points of the second set. It was then that the 8th in the world put the Frenchman’s feet back on the ground. 18-1 is the series that the Malaysian inflicted on the Habs in a completely one-sided second set. Leading by 17 points and thus having as many shuttlecocks of matches, Zii Jia Lee saw Brice Leverdez resist and dismiss two. But it was the Malaysian who had the last word (21-17, 21-5 in 35 minutes). The latter thus secures first place in the pool and the place in the round of 16 that goes with it. For Brice Leverdez, despite a great victory against Artem Pochtarov, the Olympic Games in Tokyo ended with an unfortunately clear defeat.
