Anthony Zambrano and the story of a winner

Without a doubt, Anthony Zambrano’s career has been as fast and surprising as the shots he does in each competition.. But what is astonishing is not his talent, which has remained intact since he started running at his school, but the precociousness with which he has done so. Evolution, promotion, discipline, effort, dedication, this and more, have been the keys for the Guajiro athlete to become an Olympic medalist today.

Anthony was born in Maicao 23 years ago. He lived moments that almost all the people who are far from the big cities must suffer, the loss of a loved one, displacement, work since he was a child, being away from his mother. Things that today are part of the past and that make the present time bigger. The merit of the one who gave nothing for lost and fought for what he loved most.

That in Zambrano’s case it is not only athletics but also his mother, Miladys Zambrano, who, alone, raised her son in the midst of adversity. From La Guajira they traveled to Barranquilla and in that city, the medalist was forged. “I went to the Supérate Games and saw chess and soccer and no, I decided on athletics. I ran barefoot, I beat the kids who had been running the longest and then Mr. Valentín Gamboa caught me. “

He started running and didn’t stop. He came to the Colombia National Team and his current coach is Nelson Gutiérrez, an Ecuadorian who has brought out the best in Anthony and that he has managed to manage his personality. The auction in history is as good as the athlete’s in his competitions.

Zambrano’s numbers have improved since he began competing outside of Colombia. In the Central Americans of Barranquilla in 2018 he made a record of 45.37A year later, in the Pan American Games in Lima, she was a gold medal and crossed the finish line with 44.83.

That same year, in the World Athletics Championships in Doha he was a silver medal, in a historic result for Colombia and he scored a 44.55 in the semifinal and in the final he finished with a 44.15. That was his best mark, until Tokyo 2020 arrived.

In his last race before Tokyo at the Florence stop in the Diamond League, he posted a record of 44.76. Already in the semifinal of the Olympic Games, he finished second with a time of 43.93, with this under the national record and the South American record. In the final, he made a time of 44.08.

His delivery for the Olympic medal

Since the Lima 2019 Pan American Games ended and Zambrano qualified for Tokyo 2020, his gaze was set on two objectives, the World Cup and joust medals. The Colombian worked for this with his coach and his practice and fun companions, Alejandro Perlaza, Diego Palomeque and Jhon Solís.

But in the middle of the dance, the jokes and the videos they share on social networks, the friends wasted no time. Even before the arrival of the pandemic, his coach knew how to distribute loads, handle the mental part, change the form of preparation without influencing performance and took forward the biggest obstacle that athletes around the world had.

His return to the slopes and historical participation in the Olympics, in which he became the third athlete to get a medal after Ximena Restrepo and Caterine Ibargüen, confirmed that he had the best preparation. Now, he is ready to compete in the 4×400 relay with the compadres who celebrate all his triumphs.
