2020/2021 Champions League Award Nominations: Dominant Chelsea Player

UEFA has released the 2020/2021 Champions League award nominations, for the best player in each position. Chelsea contributed the most players.

Awards will be given to the best goalkeeper, defender, midfielder and striker of the 2020/2021 Champions League. UEFA will announce it at the 2021/2022 Champions League group stage draw, which will take place on Thursday 26 August in Istanbul, Turkey, local time.

Voters or judges consist of 32 coaches participating in the group stage of the 2020/2021 Champions League, along with 55 journalists from each of UEFA’s member associations, selected by the European Sports Media (ESM) group. Coaches are not allowed to select players from their own team.

Coaches and journalists will be asked to select a list of three players in each category by allocating five points, three points, and one point respectively from the available player choices. Final results are based on the total number of votes cast by coaches and journalists.

Chelsea as the team that won the 2020/2021 Champions League contributed the most players. Of the 12 positions, spread five Chelsea players. The rest are three from Manchester City, and one each from Real Madrid, Borussia Dortmund, Paris Saint-Germain and Bayern Munich.

From Chelsea there is Edouard Mendy in the goalkeeper position, Cesar Azpilicueta and Antonio Ruediger as defender, and Jorginho and N’Golo Kante in the midfield position.

There are no names for Cristiano Ronaldo and Lionel Messi in the striker position, the same as last season. Neymar, who was nominated last season, has now also disappeared. The three players happened to fail to make a big impact on their team in the 2020/2021 Champions League.

The competition is now filled by Robert Lewandowski from Bayern Munich, Kylian Mbappe from Paris Saint-Germain, and Erling Haaland as a Borussia Dortmund player.
