Cuba participates in the Paralympic Games, Tokyo 2020, from August 24 to September 5, 2021. The delegation has 16 athletes.

Cubans, once again, show that they can overcome all adversities and become elite athletes even with a physical disability.

Cuban athletes at the Tokyo Paralympic games

1. Leinier Savón (long jump)

The 32-year-old from Guantanamo, Savón stretched further than ever in his life in the long jump competition and achieving the silver medal, this August 30.

Leinier participates in the category of profoundly visually impaired. While enlisting for mandatory military service in Cuba, doctors discovered that there was an inherited condition called retinoschisis that affects the retina of the eye.

2. Leonardo Díaz (album launch)

The 46-year-old from Bayamero got the bronze medal with a shot of 43.36 meters (his best mark of the season) to give the delegation his second metal.

Leonardo participates in the category of immobility in the lower extremities and trunk, due to a spinal cord injury. He has paraplegia after being involved in an accident while serving in the Cuban military.

3. Omara Durand (400 meters flat)

The 29-year-old from Santiago will participate in the 400 meter dash and the hope of the Cuban delegation to get the gold medal.
Omara has a visual impairment disability due to cataracts.

4. Yunier Fernández (table tennis)

Yunier Fernández, 38, fell in the quarterfinals to number one in the ranking, Korean Young Dae Joo, and finished fifth.

The Cuban has quadriplegia as a result of an accident at age 20, when he jumped into a shallow pool.

5. Leidy Rodríguez (weightlifting)

The 37-year-old Bayamera could not lift the weight of her crowbar in the strength test lying down to 41 kg.
Leidy has limb deficiency. He was born with an equinovarus, also known as clubfoot, and the condition affected both feet. At 2 years of age, she underwent surgery to correct the malformation, but gangrene appeared after the operation and both legs were amputated below the knee.

6. Damián López (cycling)

The 44-year-old from Havana participated in the 3000-meter cycling event at the Velodrome.
Damien received a 13,000 volt electric shock that injured his face and had both arms amputated below the elbow. In 2018, he was run over and lost his right leg.

7. Yordani Fernández (judo)

The 32-year-old man from Matanzas lost against the Korean Geun Choi Gwang, in the discipline of judo (100 kg). The Cuban has a visual impairment, since he was 9 years old.

8. Noralvis de la Heras (album launch)

The 56-year-old from Guantanamera was eighth out of 10 athletes with a 30.62-meter shot, her best mark.

9. Oniger Drake (weightlifting)

The 49-year-old Cuban was seventh out of nine athletes. Oniger lost his legs when they were amputated, on his knees, after falling from a moving train.

10. Ángel Jiménez (Long jump)

The 39-year-old Cuban was able to jump 6.25 meters and was in ninth position. Angel has a visual impairment.

11. Guillermo Varona (javelin throw)

Guillermo Varona, 26, reached 63.30 meters (three further from his best mark) to also set a record for America.

12. Gerardo Rodríguez (judo)

The 31-year-old Cuban was defeated in two of his three matches on the Nippon Budokan mat, in the specialty of judo (81 kg). Gerardo has a visual impairment.

13. Yenigladys Suárez (shooting)

Yenigladys Suárez, 33, will participate in the shooting discipline (10-meter air pistol and 25-meter mixed pistol), on August 31 and September 2.
In 2003, he injured his spinal cord while training with weights with the Cuban youth national athletics team.

14. Roniel Yankiel Sol Cervantes (long jump)

Robiel Yankiel, 18, will participate in the Men’s Long Jump discipline on March 31.

15. Ulicer Aguilera Cruz (javelin throw)

The 31-year-old Cuban will participate in the javelin throwing specialty. He has a visual impairment due to degenerative myopia and a basketball accident.

16. Lorenzo Perez Escalona (swimming)

The 35-year-old Cuban will participate in the freestyle discipline (50, 100 and 400 meters). He is a paraplegic due to an accident during Hurricane Dennis.

Finally, Cuba accumulates 2 medals (1 silver and 1 gold) in the Tokyo 2020 Paralympic games. Also, the Cubans got 15 medals at the Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games.
