Vela, Mattia Camboni pays a false start and finishes 5th in the RS: X in Tokyo 2020. Haunted medal for Italy – OA Sport

Bitter epilogue in Enoshima for Mattia Camboni, who remains sensationally at the foot of the podium (5th) in the RS: X at the Tokyo 2021 Olympic Games due to a disqualification for false start on the occasion of the Medal Race today. The Italian, vice-champion of the world in office, thus climbs from third to fifth place in the general classification and must postpone the appointment with the first five-circle medal in his career for at least three years.

Chaotic start that knocked out Camboni’s two direct opponents in the fight for medals for the same reason, the Frenchman Thomas Goyard and the Pole Piotr Myszka, arithmetically handing over the Olympic gold medal to the Dutchman Kiran Badloe (absolute ruler of the last three years and of this event) and incredibly putting athletes back in the race for the podium who now seemed doomed after the 12 fleet races.

At the end Goyard, with a bit of luck, still kept the silver medal despite the disqualification with a single point of margin on the Chinese Bi Kun (jumped from 5th to 3rd place overall thanks to fourth place in the Medal Race) and 2 against the tandem formed by the Israeli Yoav Cohen (winner of the final test) and the blue Mattia Camboni.

On balance Camboni concludes his second Olympic participation one point from the bronze and only 2 points from the silver, despite the 22 points accumulated in the Medal Race due to disqualification. Atrocious mockery for the native of Civitavecchia, who could also count on favorable weather conditions (light wind) for his characteristics in the most important Medal Race of the five-year period.
