Ugo Humbert shatters dreams of Stefanos Tsitsipas at the Olympics

The Tokyo 2020 Olympics kicked off in glamorous style last week with an extravagant opening ceremony. Since its inauguration, the mega event has made headlines around the world. So far, the tournament has spawned some of the most passionate battles, especially in the long-awaited tennis event.

In round 3, fans were sent into a frenzy after the epic encounters witnessed thus far. However, the best was yet to come when French international Ugo Humbert took on fan favorite Stefanos Tsitsipas.

From the first swing, both players looked absolutely lethal on the attack. With just a year of difference between the two, the odds were pretty equal. However, whoever defeated his opponent would claim the ultimate bragging rights.

Without much separating the two, it was just anyone’s game until the end. Fans waited in silence as the two young men fired at each other for a spot in the quarterfinals of the Tokyo 2020 Olympics.

Unsurprisingly, Stefanos Tsitsipas started the game with a commanding style. He established his authority over the game, causing riots on the court. Despite Ugo’s efforts to fight back, Stefanos destroyed him in the first set.

In doing so, Stefanos won 18 of 22 points on his first serve and a staggering 16 of 18 on his second serve. Stefanos broke 6 aces compared to his 2 counterparts and made life difficult for Ugo on the court.

The score at the end of the set was 6-2 in favor of the Greek. To have any chance of winning, Ugo would need a miracle. Stefanos started the second set in a similar fashion. However, as he sought to dominate once again, the defeat of the first set had awakened Ugo.

The fans who predicted Humbert’s resurrection nailed it, as the Frenchman seemed revitalized, rejuvenated and twice as ready for battle. The 23-year-old won 40 points in the second set, forcing Tsitsipas to make 10 mistakes.

He won 17 of 32 points on his first serve and scored a remarkable 14 of 15 points on his second serve. The momentum of the game shifted to Ugo’s side as the match ran its course. Courtesy of relentless fighting, Ugo won the second set 7-6, taking the game to a decisive third and final set.

It was now or never for two young gunmen. Final countdown Going into the deciding set, it was all or nothing. However, Tsitsipas had an injury scare that delayed the third set. Without a doubt, even when the set finally began, the off-game mishap seemed to have left Tsitsipas off guard.

The Greek had lost all concentration on the game while fighting on set. Noticing his opponent’s inattention in the game, Ugo made the most of it and established his dominance head-on.

As the fierce rivalry continued, the match began to move to one side of the court. The epic battle finally had its deserved winner. Until the second set, Stefanos continued to play some of his best tennis.

However, the shock of the injury had clearly affected Stefanos both mentally and physically. Regardless, Ugo’s struggle from his defeat in the first set to a dominant victory in the third set cannot be praised enough.

In a test of character and spirit, Ugo Humbert won the game 2-6, 7-6, 5-2. This will surely be considered one of the best games of the Tokyo 2020 Olympics so far.
