Triple fireworks ignite too short: BG Göttingen loses 95:99 after a spectacular start

Last home game of the BG Göttingen: Against medi Bayreuth, the Veilchen lost a half-time lead on Sunday afternoon after the break and had to admit defeat 95:99 (56:48). The hosts set off fireworks, especially in the first quarter.

Why throw from near or middle distance when there are three points for a hit beyond the 6.75 meter line? That is what the violets thought in the first quarter. It was 41:26 after ten minutes. The first 36 points had fallen after “real” threesomes, twelve of the 15 attempts (80 percent) had hit the target: Nelson Weidemann (3), Luke Nelson (2), Rihards Lomazs (2), Mathis Mönninghoff (1) and Aubrey Dawkins (4), who had turned 26 the day before, had conjured up by then and caused disbelief in the opponent’s head and cheers on the BG bench. Dennis Kramer also scored again for three points with an “And One” before Luke Nelson finished the quarter with a lay-up that counted “only” two points.

In the second section it seemed to go on like this at first, because captain Akeem Vargas also added himself to the list of successful distance throwers (44:28). This was followed by a 6-0 run by Bayreuth and BG head coach Roel Moors took a break. The hosts now had some problems in the end, and there were also step errors.

Only in the final phase did the violets meet again – after a technical foul against Bayreuth it was free throws from Lomazs and Nelson and then finally the first points from Tai Odiase and a crashing dunk from Nelson (56:45). At least the free throws (6/6) fell now, of which the BG was only awarded one in the first quarter, Bayreuth on the other hand 14. The fouls were distributed accordingly unevenly. But that also changed in the course of the second section. The Franks came up to 48:56, the 16-point lead after the first quarter had halved.

After the break, the game became more and more a fighting game between two teams who are close to each other in the table. At Bayreuth there were three pointers from Matthew Tiby and Osvaldas Olisevicius, so that the encounter in the 26th minute at 66:65 was absolutely even for the BG. At the BG some free throws did not fall, the rhythm against more and more aggressively defending guests was gone. You could also notice the loss of strength after the games in quick succession after the quarantine. With another three, Bayreuth took the lead again for the first time after the 2-0 in the opening minute (71: 68/28.). And they increased that to 77:72 by the end of the quarter.

Suspense for the final quarter was programmed. Dawkins hit a three, Deishuan Booker too – and even with a free throw (79: 81/33.). However, the violets hardly get any stops on the defensive to interrupt the flow of the game that the Franks had now clearly found. Dawkins, up to then the best thrower in the BG with 20 points, bent over and then injured his foot, had to go out and never came back on the field. As soon as the game began, it came to an end. Weidemann and Lomazs scored three, Nelson two free throws (90: 90/38.). And the crunchtime was exciting again: free throws on both sides, but no more opportunity to turn the game with a throw from distance. Now, of all times, the BG could have used him.

Roel Moors was disappointed with the outcome of the game. “Some wanted to play an all-star game today,” he said, describing his impressions. He missed the aggressiveness of his team, criticized 17 ball losses and in the meantime he missed the good ball movement. Only in the final phase came a few more assists. He did not want to accept a lack of strength after the exhausting games, he would have liked his players to have greater mental strength. In a brief summary of the season, he called his team “spectacular”, they had done a lot of good things. He would have liked to play for the eighth playoff place longer.

A Bundesliga season without spectators is (almost) over. A season without chants, purple walls, clapping with the players after the final siren, autograph sessions with the sponsors and a summer party with the fan club. The team deserved “their” fans so much and needed them so much in some games. Despite these unusual circumstances, after 33 encounters, 13 wins were recorded – not as many as in previous years. One more could come: The Göttingen team will play the catch-up game at EWE Baskets Oldenburg on Tuesday evening (7 p.m.).
