The Copa del Rey Mapfre remains faithful to its vocation as an open regatta, and this year brings together boats of nine classes: five monotypes that sail in real time and four that sail in compensated time. Today we talk about the two that represent the extremes of the fleet by length range: the IRC 1 and the Herbalife J70.

IRC 1

IRCs 1 will compete in compensated time under the international IRC formula, a system developed by the Royal Ocean Racing Club (RORC) and the Union Nationale pour La Course au Large (UNCL). This edition’s fleet includes mainly TP52 units, including French Stephan Neve’s Paprec Recyclage / SOM IX (third place in ORC 0 in 2019 and IRC 1 in 2016) and Russian Vadik Yakimenko’s Freccia Rossa (third in IRC 1 in 2018). The TP52s are 15.8-meter-long high-performance boats, recognized as a class in 2001 and which in their most advanced versions currently star on the 52 SuperSeries professional circuit.

In IRC 1, the Wally 60 Good Job Guys of Argentine Lucas Massa will also compete, which with its 18 meters in length will be the largest boat in the 39 Copa del Rey Mapfre.

IRC 1s will play a maximum of 11 rounds in windward / leeward format between Monday, August 2, and Saturday, August 7.

Herbalife J70

The J70s will compete for the first time for the Copa del Rey Mapfre, increasing under the title Herbalife J70 the number of one-design classes that navigate in real time. The J70s have a length of 6.93 meters, a displacement of just 800 kilograms and have a minimum crew of three people. Andalusian, Valencian, Galician, Balearic teams and an Italian squad will participate in its debut in the waters of the bay of Palma.

The Herbalife J70 competition program will consist of a maximum of 15 windward-leeward runs between Monday, August 2, and Saturday, August 7.
