Williams’ loss means she will continue her quest to equal Margaret Court’s record in 24 majors.
The American, who lost 6-3 7-5 to Rybakina, has not passed the fourth round on clay at Roland Garros since 2016.
She will now turn to Wimbledon – the third major tournament of the season – which is played on grass and starts on June 28.
“I’m a little excited to change surfaces, but historically I’ve done really well on grass,” said Williams, seven-time Wimbledon singles champion.
“I also played really well on clay. Not this season in particular. ”
His victory over Williams led Rybakina, 21, to the quarterfinals of his first major tournament.
“I’m very happy with my match, it was great,” said Rybakina, who will now face Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova in the semi-finals.
“I was young, of course I watched his games on TV,” added Williams’ Rybakina.
When Williams won his first Grand Slam title at the 1999 US Open, Rybakina was just two months old.
“It’s hard to wait for anything, because you watch TV and it’s a whole different thing when you come out on the pitch and feel strong and stuff,” said the world number 22.
“I knew serving was going to be hard for me to come back. It’s strong, but I was ready. Then after a few points, I felt good, so nothing. ”
Federer is aiming for his ninth Wimbledon title at his favorite stadium later this month.
