Sebastian Gleim about Frankfurt Skyliners

VMaybe Sebastian Gleim helped choose his successor at the Fraport Skyliners. The basketball coach and managing director Gunnar Wöbke spoke about who could become the new head coach in Frankfurt in the coming Bundesliga season. However, this exchange of views was a few months ago.

At that time it was clear that Gleim would lose his coaching post after this round because Wöbke wanted it that way. In return, Gleim offered him the position of sports director in the future. And that’s why the new coaching position to be filled was an issue between the two of them. Until it finally became clear in internal communication that Gleim did not want to become sports director in Frankfurt. After that, the 36-year-old was often left out when it came to questions about the new season.

For Gleim, the Skyliners are “a great basketball organization, of which there aren’t many in the Bundesliga”. And yet the Bad Hersfeld native decided to become head coach of the first division rivals and first-time play-off participant Crailsheim in the coming season. “I chose the option where I think I can take the next step – and that’s Crailsheim,” says Gleim. Conversely, this means that, in his opinion, his career in Frankfurt would have stagnated at best. But he wanted to continue to be in charge of the sport as a head coach. It was only in this leadership role that Wöbke was apparently no longer convinced of Gleim’s abilities. The managing director is of the opinion that the Frankfurt team could have reached more than eleventh place after the main round.

“If you look at it that way from the outside, then that’s legitimate,” says Gleim. However, he knows “what we have achieved in this very difficult time. I fully support what we have all achieved together. I won’t let that happen, ”he emphasized. For him it is clear that “we did a very good job”. Even Wöbke’s critical remark that the young players should have had more playing time in certain phases of the season, he does not accept and replies: “We did a very good job there too.” However, it is apparently not a break between him and Wöbke came. Probably mainly because the young trainer sees the positive in the cooperation with the managing director, who helped him to make a big career leap. Wöbke was “so crazy” to “appoint me as BBL head coach. I’m very grateful to him for that, ”says Gleim.
