Pablo Cuevas also resigns from the Tokyo Olympics: Everything has changed

Another South American figure who gets off the Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games. Now it was the Uruguayan Pablo Cuevas, who announced his withdrawal through his social networks. The 35-year-old tennis player, current world number 84, acknowledged that he prioritized the European tour on brick dust that will be played in the following weeks.

Cuevas spread the following message on his Twitter account: “Tokyo was going to be his second Olympic participation, after Rio de Janeiro-2016 where he was out in the second round. Uruguay will bring eleven athletes from five disciplines to the Games that begin on July 23: swimming, sailing, judo, rowing and athletics.

“It is with great sadness that I have to make the difficult decision to withdraw from the Olympic Games. The pandemic and the injury at the beginning of the year altered all the planned plans and forced me to change the competition calendar more than once.

The over-demanding product of the partial fracture that I suffered in Australia, combined with the accumulated physical wear and tear of an extensive career like mine, implies having to carefully analyze how far the body can be asked and what limits it is not advisable to cross.

I have the expectation ahead of me to continue improving in the ranking and to arrive in very good physical and tennis shape to represent Uruguay in the next Davis Cup series. To meet those goals I have to take advantage of the brick dust tour at the Bastad, Umag and Kitzbuhel tournaments that overlap with the Japan Games.

Going up that I want to play for a few more years, I understand that it is the right decision to continue representing Uruguay in each week of the circuit that I play around the world. I thank you for the follow-up, unconditional support in all these years and we are going for much more !! ”.

Do you agree with the decision made by the experienced Pablo Cuevas?
