Olympia 2021: Commentary on cycling – sport

Anyone who describes other athletes as camel drivers, such as the German cycling sports director at the Olympics, is disqualified for an office in sport. The failure also draws attention to deep-rooted grievances in the system.

It’s hard to say what makes you stunned now: the racism or the reaction to it. “Get the camel drivers!” And again: “Get the camel drivers! Come!” Patrick Moster, the sports director of the Association of German Cyclists, saw this as a tried and tested stylistic device in the Olympic time trial to swear his driver Nikias Arndt to the competition from Algeria and Eritrea.
