NEW ERA FOR GOLF IN LATIN AMERICA

As of the 2021-22 season the PGA TOUR Latinoamérica will have a new way of measuring player performance throughout the season: the Totalplay Cup.

The PGA TOUR and Totalplay, through Grupo Salinas, announced the launch of the Totalplay Cup, a historic sponsorship for a Latin American tour of the PGA which also consolidates the relationship with the company in a market as important for the development of golf as Mexico.

This will mean a change in the TOUR’s point system and essential support is provided so that it continues to train and develop the next stars of international golf, said the president of the TOUR. PGA TOUR Latinoamérica, Todd Rhinehart.

“This day is very important for him PGA TOUR Latin America. It is very exciting to welcome this Totalplay Cup that will help the development of the entire circuit, because this can make the concept of PGA TOUR Latin America ”, pointed out Rhinehart.

Prize

Similar to the role the FedExCup plays for the PGA TOUR and the Charles Schwab Cup for him PGA TOUR Champions, the Totalplay Cup will follow a points-based system to measure the success of the players during the season of the PGA TOUR Latinoamérica.

The Totalplay Cup will award the winner of each regular season event 500 points: 300 will be for the runner-up and 190 for the third.

The top ranked player at the end of the 2021-22 season will be crowned the Totalplay Cup Champion and named the Player of the Year. PGA TOUR Latinoamérica, in addition to being eligible to play the following season in all the events of the Korn Ferry Tour, the step that precedes the Tour of the PGA.

It should be remembered that the PGA TOUR Latinoamérica was created in 2012 with the idea of ​​giving opportunities to players in the region. The tour has traveled throughout Latin America giving players the opportunity to compete at the highest level. The player with the highest performance is recognized with the Roberto De Vicenzo award.

Taking root

The inaugural season of PGA TOUR Latinoamérica had eleven tournaments in seven countries in the region.

Since its founding, the tour has played tournaments in 18 countries on the American continent and the Caribbean. It has held a total of 23 events in Mexican territory.

To date 156 players of the PGA TOUR Latinoamérica managed to get promoted to the Korn Ferry Tour; 33 of them lifted the champion trophy; and 28 reached the PGA TOUR, nine of whom already know what it’s like to win among the world’s golf elite.

The 2021-22 season of PGA TOUR Latinoamérica starts in November. The first Totalplay Cup champion will seek to follow the successful path of prominent TOUR alumni such as Juan Sebastián Muñoz, Mito Pereira, Roberto Díaz, José de Jesús Rodríguez, Julián Etulain, Nelson Ledesma, Lanto Griffin, Nate Lashley and Harry Higos, among many others.

Challenges

For his part, Eduardo Kuri, CEO of Totalplay, expressed that it is very exciting to help strengthen Grupo Salinas’ relationship with the PGA TOUR through PGA TOUR Latinoamérica.

Season closing

The launch of the Totalplay Cup took place within the framework of the visit of the PGA TOUR Latin America to Mexico, where for the first time the Bupa Championship presented by Volvo was held, which ended a season that began in March 2020 with the Estrella del Mar Open in Mazatlán.

Right at the end of that event, the Covid-19 pandemic forced the PGA TOUR Latinoamérica to interrupt the campaign for nine months, to restart it in December of last year.

Finally, Todd Rhinehart gave great news that, he said, “is very exciting and comes directly from Mayakoba, where seven more dates of this tournament have already been confirmed within the calendar of the PGA TOUR. We are very excited because we know that the future is bright for golf in Mexico and we hope soon to continue developing great figures and exponents, such as Abraham Ancer and Carlos Ortiz ”.
