TOKYO, Jul 27 (Reuters) – Japan’s Takanori Nagase won the gold medal in the men’s up to 80-pound judo category at the Tokyo Olympics on Tuesday by beating Mongolian Saeid Mollaei in the final, extending the streak of titles of local judokas.
The victory of Nagase, a bronze medalist at Rio 2016, marked the host nation’s fifth gold in judo at the Games, closing in on its Olympic record of eight titles at Athens 2004.
Austrian Shamil Borchashvili and Belgian Matthias Casse took bronze, their first Olympic medals.
In the women’s up to 63 kg category, French silver medalist Clarisse Agbegnenou in Rio topped the podium by defeating Tina Trstenjak in the final. The result was a rematch after what happened four years ago, when the now champion was defeated by the Slovenian.
Maria Centracchio, from Italy, and Catherine Beauchemin-Pinard, from Canada, won the bronze medals, their first Olympic medals.
