Nadal returns to the circuit in early August in Washington after a break

Spanish tennis player Rafael Nadal will return to the ATP circuit in early August for a tournament in Washington. The 20-time Grand Slam champion, who has not played since the semi-final defeat at Roland Garros, has received a wild card from the organizers and will perform in the US capital for the first time in his career.

Nadal ordered free time after the Paris Grand Slam tournament and also missed Wimbledon. He had previously announced that he would not even go to the Olympic Games in Tokyo. The tournament in Washington, where he will start for the first time, is scheduled for August 2 to 8.

“I’ve never been here, I wanted to look here and play here. I’m looking forward to returning to the courts, and Washington will be the best start to the American summer tour,” Nadal said in a statement from the Citi Open. “I’m looking forward to meeting my American fans again, whom I haven’t seen since the 2019 US Open,” he added.
