BOSTON – Rookie Tanner Houck struck out seven batters in four innings of work to lead the Red Sox to a 4-1 win in Game 2 of a doubles program against the Toronto Blue Jays on Wednesday night.

The two teams thus divided the honors of the day in Boston as the Jays won the first game by the same score of 4-1.

In the evening, Houck allowed only one point on two hits. Garrett Whitlock (4-1) was credited with the victory by pitching two innings without allowing any relief points. Then Matt Barnes saved the win for the 23rd time in 27 attempts.

In the victory, another rookie, Jarren Duran, hit his first triple in the majors. A good hit for a point in the fourth inning. He also came to score on the play because of the error of outfielder George Springer who juggled the ball.

For the Jays, starter Steven Matz (8-6) suffered the loss by allowing four runs on nine hits in three and a third innings.

Victory for the Jays in the 1st match

In Game 1 of the afternoon, Randal Grichuk hit a home run and produced three runs to help the Toronto Blue Jays win 4-1 over the Red Sox.

Grichuk first leveled the score 1-1 with an infield single in second.

He added a 19th homerun two runs later, following a double from Lourdes Gurriel.

George Springer also hit the long ball for the Jays, who had lost their last two games.

Robbie Ray (9-5) gave up one run and five hits in six innings, striking out eight batters.

“My glide was efficient, especially in the fifth and sixth,” said Ray. “I made some really good gear changes too.

“You have to have a balance. The Red Sox are good hitters. There’s a reason they’re leading the section.”

Jordan Romano scored an eighth save.

Garrett Richards (6-6) allowed four runs and eight hits in four innings.

Boston gave up a scoring opportunity and no second outs. Two strikeouts followed and a ball in center field.
