Maria Centracchio wins bronze in judo category -63 kg and gives the tenth medal to Italy

The medal number 10 for Italy at the Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games was won by a great Maria Centracchio who won bronze in judo, category -63 kg.

The judoka from Molise got the better of the golden score in the final for three shidos against the Dutch Juul Franssen at the end of a hard-fought match.

Maria had started her Olympic journey by defeating the Malagasy Nomenjanahary for ippon, then always overcoming the Hungarian Ozabas for ippon, then the Polish Agata Ozdoba-Blach at the golden score, and was only beaten by the Slovenian Olympian Tina Trstenjak in the semifinals.

It is the second blue medal to come from judo after Odette Giuffrida’s bronze and the first won by an athlete from Molise.

“I’m not realizing what happened yet but I want to thank my family, my boyfriend, my friends, the people who know what’s behind it, because there is so much behind this medal. Then there is Fabio Basile who warmed me up today and was very keen on it. I’ve always said: the hard part is getting to the Olympics, then I’ll see it. I experienced a terrible 2020, first mononucleosis and then positivity at Covid. The Odette Giuffrida medal gave me an incredible boost. We have a great feeling, being there for each other is an added value. I dedicate this bronze to my Molise, which exists and leads strong! ”, Said in tears Maria Centracchio, 26, of the Fiamme Oro Roma, who started from number 27 on the scoreboard and who has accomplished a memorable feat.
