Both clubs informed on Wednesday about the “fundamental agreement” of the change of young star Jadon Sancho to the English football record champions Manchester United.

SMarco Rose didn’t have much time. “I organized my move this morning – and I have to leave right away,” he said. But of course he still liked to take the time, because that was the day he had been working towards: The 44-year-old has finally arrived at a top club. On Thursday, his first official day at Borussia Dortmund, he was presented to his new place of work. He left no doubt that he knows exactly what is expected of him there.
“I know that you have to play at the top, that you have to play for titles,” said Rose. However, this is not a problem for him. On the contrary: after all, this is also his claim. It is still too early to state a specific objective. However, they will follow – at the latest after he has spoken to the players in more detail. Because of the many Dortmund European Championship participants, this will probably only be the case from July 23rd in the training camp in Bad Ragaz (Switzerland). However, the team goals will be “ambitious”, he promised.
The expectations of Rose are high – but they don’t just refer to possible titles. “The football that Marco stands for is the one we need. We have to play football that people enjoy. We also want to win some titles, but above all we have to exude the BVB feeling like we did in the last six months, ”said Hans-Joachim Watzke.
The BVB managing director and sports director Michael Zorc decided on Rose above all because he preferred an aggressive style: constant work against the ball, willingness to run and quick switching. “Workers’ football fits in with Dortmund, so running a lot, winning balls and getting the stadium behind you,” explained Rose.

That’s what they’ve been longing for in Dortmund for a long time. A coaching change had therefore already been made in December. Lucien Favre, who stood for a more wait-and-see and controlled style, had to leave. The successor was his assistant Edin Terzic, who managed to revitalize BVB and at the end of the season to lead it back into the Champions League and to win the DFB Cup.

However, since Rose had been confirmed as the upcoming head coach months earlier, there were long discussions as to whether it would even be feasible for Terzic to work as an assistant coach again as planned.
This delicate problem was elegantly resolved: Terzic was appointed Technical Director. “I would have liked to keep him as an assistant coach. As a guy and as a coach, it would have been a very good fit, ”said Rose and announced at the same time that she wanted to work very closely with Terzic. “I will tap into him and ask him what we can take away from the successful second half of the season. I’d be stupid if I didn’t use that, ”he said.
Sancho has increased its value more than tenfold
In the past few days, Rose had discussed the timetable for the season preparation and the composition of the squad with Terzic, Watzke, sports director Michael Zorc and licensed player manager Sebastian Kehl. So he was prepared to lose an outstanding offensive player in Jadon Sancho (21). Sancho will join Manchester United. The English record champions will receive a transfer fee of 85 million euros.
This means that Sancho, who came from Manchester City’s junior boarding school in 2017 for just under 8 million euros, has increased its value more than tenfold. There are also bonus payments. “It was the player’s exemplary wish. He told us that very clearly, “explained Watzke:” We’re not looking forward to the money, we’re sad that he’s gone. “BVB will now try to sign a replacement for Sancho. The Norwegian came to RB Salzburg in January 2019 – when Rose was head coach there. “We had to set it up first,” recalls the coach: “He also had to get used to the new game system. That wasn’t easy for Erling. ”Haaland was therefore only used twice in the second half of the season.
Only then did Haaland make the breakthrough. “After coach Rose was gone and he was finally allowed to play,” said Rose with a smile. How does he currently rate Haaland? “How can you describe the development in the last two years?” Said Rose: “Rocket!” He was happy to be able to work with Haaland again.
