“Magic” Doku Reaps International Praise: From New York Times to Tweet Lineker | European Football Championship 2020

A tweet from Gary Lineker. Three paragraphs at The New York Times. And a lot of praise from the foreign newspapers. The big bright spot of the Red Devils against Italy was Jeremy Doku. An overview of the international praise for the wing forward.

3 alinea’s in The New York Times

The renowned “The New York Times” devotes a full article to the elimination of the Red Devils at the European Championship. “The Golden Generation of Belgium is looking for a bright spot” is the title of the piece.

“A defeat to Italy has sent Belgium’s collection of stars home empty-handed,” it sounds in the introduction. “But first it gave us a glimpse into the future.”

The American media giant hints at Jeremy Doku. The article devotes 3 paragraphs to the flank attacker. “It’s hard not to be captivated by Jeremy Doku. He’s a cartoon soccer player. He darts past defenders as if they were figures from his imagination. He jumps before accelerating, feints and dances. The ball never leaves his enchantment.”

It was telling that the defender who terrorized Doku all night gave his pants away afterwards. It was not the first time he was exposed.

“At one point, Doku danced in from the left. Past one Italian, past another. When a third appeared, he passed there too. Why not do it, if you can? It was significant that Giovanni Di Lorenzo – the defender who terrorized Doku – gave his pants away afterwards, because it was not the first time he was exposed.”

“While the adventure ends for many members of the Belgian Golden Generation, the story for Doku is just beginning.”

Tweet from Gary Lineker

English football legend and presenter Gary Lineker was also enchanted by Doku’s performance. “Young Jeremy Doku is making me dizzy,” he tweeted. “There will be clubs lining up to sign him.”

Topic in foreign newspapers

Many foreign newspapers also praised Doku for his flashy performance. “It was a surprising move by Roberto Martinez,” said the Italian newspaper Gazzetta dello Sport. “Doku is clearly ahead of Di Lorenzo. The defender was short of breath on more than one occasion when Doku rushed past him.”

This is a new step in the development of Doku

The English Daily Mail was also positively surprised by the lightning-fast winger. “He delivered an impressive performance with his insane speed. Doku was a constant threat to the Italians. His selection over Yannick Carrasco was more than right.”

“Doku was not surprised by the circumstances,” we read in the French L’Équipe. “He waltzed down the right flank.” Ouest France added: “The Rennis attacker showed his enormous talent for the first time with the national team. This is another step in his development.”
