Today, the 31-year-old Roglič followed the bronze of Tadeje Pogačar from Saturday’s road race, in which the winner of the last two years of the Tour de France took care of Slovenia’s first cycling medal.

Roglič, who has two overall triumphs from the Vuelta (2019 and 2020), won the title of Olympic champion with a fantastic performance and won by more than a minute ahead of Dumoulin. Kukrle lost over five and a half minutes to the winner.

The running order was long ruled by the early-start Rigoberto Uranus and the young Belgian star Remco Evenepoel, whose experienced Colombian was two and a half seconds ahead. But then it was the turn of the favorites and the cast of medals began to change suddenly.

The 44.2-kilometer-long track was defended by the silver defender from Rio de Janeiro and the time trial champion of 2017 Dumoulin, who temporarily interrupted his professional career in January and did not return to racing until June, when he found the joy of cycling again.

However, the time of Roglič, who completed two demanding circuits in the environment of the Fuji International Circuit in 55 minutes and four seconds, was the winner. The Swiss Stefan Küng was behind the bronze by only four tenths of a second.

Only behind him were the two main favorites for gold: the reigning world champion from the time trial Italian Filippo Ganna and the Belgian Wout van Aert, who at the World Championships last year achieved a silver double from the road race and the chronometer and the second was also in Saturday’s road race.
