The third day of the Olympic Games in Tokyo brought the Czechs their first medal success. Canoeist Lukáš Rohan in the C1 category was not enough only for the Slovenian Benjamin Savšek and finished for a sensational silver medal at his first Olympic Games.

Alexander Choupenitch, a fleet player with Belarusian roots, took care of the first Czech medal after 113 years of fencing. He defeated the Spaniard Carlos Llavador in the opening match at 15:11, and defeated the 38-year-old German Peter Joppich in the eighth final at 15:13. In the quarterfinals, he defeated Muhammad Hamza from Egypt 15: 9, in the semifinals he was not enough for Ka Cheung from Hong Kong at 10:15 and in the bronze medal match he defeated the home Japanese Takahira Shikine 15: 8.

Imagination! The Czechia celebrates its second medal in Tokyo. Choupenitch won bronze

Sports shooter Tomeček in skeet attacked for a long time to advance to the finals, but at the decisive moment he lost in a shootout with Dan Hansen and finished seventh. His colleague Šumová was also in the event, who was in tenth position after Sunday’s qualification, but today she lost four places.

Czech tennis players did not maintain a 100% balance. Krejčíková defeated the Canadian Leylah Fernandez 6: 2, 6: 4, Vondroušová the Romanian Mihaela Buzarnescu 6: 1, 6: 2 and Karolína Plíšková managed in three sets with the Spaniard Carla Suárez 6: 3, 6: 7 and 6: 1. Kvitová lost to Belgian Alison Van Uytvanck 7: 5, 3: 6 and 0: 6 and will not defend the bronze from Rio.

Tokyo 2021 Olympic Games

2021 Olympic Games with designation Tokyo 2020 are in progress from July 23 to August 8, 2021. The Summer Olympics are held without spectators and there are 115 Czech athletes in action. At the 2016 Olympics in Rio, the Czechs won ten medals (one gold, two silver and seven bronzes).

The medal was attacked by biker Ondřej Cink, who fought for bronze in a cross country race, but then met a rear wheel defect and the medal dream faded. The winner was Brit Thomas Pidcock in front of the Swiss Mathias Flückiger and the Spaniard David Valer.

Yachting also has a Czech representative at the Olympics. Windsurfer Karel Lavický was in 23rd place after the first three races of the Olympic regatta and it was already certain that he would improve his position from the previous two games. After the second day, he dropped to 24th place.

The reigning European champion in the kular two-wheeler Barbora Seemanová advanced from the heat to Tuesday’s semifinals. With a time of 1: 56.38, she finished in 7th place. Kristýna Horská completed the position race, advancing to Tuesday’s sixteen-member semifinals.

The women’s triathlon race will start half an hour before midnight CENTRAL and will feature two Czech representatives – Vendula Frintová and Petra Kuříková. The men – without Czech participation – fought for gold today and are already at the finish line. Gold was won by Nor Kristian Blummenfelt. The silver was won by the Briton Alex Yee, the third by New Zealander Hayden Wilde.

The first Olympic winner in skateboarding was 13-year-old Japanese Momidji Nishiy, who followed Sunday’s triumph of Jute Horigome.

The organizers today announced 16 new cases of coronavirus infection in accredited individuals, including three athletes. The number of cases related to games has climbed to 148 since July 1.

The organizers do not disclose the names or nationalities of the infected persons. One of the most affected expeditions to the Olympics is the Czechs: due to the covid-19 infection, cyclist Michal Schlegel, table tennis player Pavel Širuček and beach volleyball player Markéta Nausch Sluková, who was to play with Barbora Hermann, lost their Olympic starts.

Another positively tested beach volleyball player, Ondřej Perušič, who, together with David Schweiner, lost today’s opening match against the Latvian couple Martins Plavinš, Edgars Točs, still feeds the theoretical hope for at least a late participation in the competition.

The Olympic Games are held without spectators at a time when the contagion is on the rise in Japan. In Tokyo, 1,763 new coronavirus cases were reported on Sunday.
