Latvian BMX cyclists do not reach the semi-finals of the Olympic Games – Tokyo 2020 – Apollo.lv – Sports

Six athletes, both men and women, took part in the Tokyo Games in each of the four quarter-finals, each taking three races. The second day of the competition was reached by the 16 best among 24 riders, but eight will win the place in the final.

Babris finished fifth in the first of three quarter-finals, ahead of one competitor. He also had to settle for fifth position in the second race, although at one point he was sixth.

To reach the semi-finals, Babrim had to finish three positions higher than the Argentine Nicolas Torres. The Latvian was the sixth part of the track, but in the last straight line he overtook Torres, which was not enough to reach the semi-finals.

Babris finished the quarterfinals with fifth place in his group and 15 points. The Latvian athlete beat only the Canadian James Palmer, who had 16 points. The group was dominated by Dutchman Nick Kimman and Twan van Gent, who prevented the others from entering the top two on all three races, winning four and five points respectively. Ten points were awarded to Brazilian Rinātne Rezend and 13 points to Torres.

Petersone was sixth in the start of the first quarter-final race, but due to a competitor’s mistake, he climbed to fifth place and overtook another competitor to the finish. In the second race after a modest start, the Latvian finished last, the sixth.

Before the last race, Petersone and ten other athletes had ten points, promising a fierce fight for the last ticket to the semifinals. Petersone lost the pace at the beginning of the track and reached the finish in sixth place, thus remaining outside the semi-finalist group.

The Latvian athlete was the last in the group with 16 points, but was missing six points until the semi-finals. In the last race, the victory was celebrated by the Australian Saja Sakakibara, who took her place in the semi-finals, accumulating 11 points. In this group, British driver Bethany Shriver won in two of the three races.

Babra’s biggest success to date is the third place in the BMX supercross at the World Cup in Colombia at the beginning of the year. Petersone can be proud of her third place finish at the end of last year in the European Cycling Union (UEC) European Cup stage.

The biggest Olympic success in this sport has been achieved for Latvia by the first Olympic champion in this discipline Maris Strombergs, who won in 2008 in Beijing, defending his title in London four years later.

The Tokyo Olympics will run until August 8.
