Kompany does not agree with the statement that there was too little verticality in Anderlecht’s game

How will Anderlecht solve this? Vincent Kompany emphasized the lack of automatisms before the match against Eupen. But it is so much more than that. Let’s call it a lack of speed of execution and a lack of vertical football.

Vincent Kompany took a while to arrive. There was a lot to discuss in the locker room. And also some patchwork, because the players left, shaking their heads and deeply disappointed. Unable to beat Union and Eupen… They had not expected that competition start.

“The result is fair and correct according to the odds,” Kompany admitted honestly. “Eupen was dangerous. The hardest thing for us was playing out the dangerous situations. We made a lot of the wrong choices or gave the wrong pass. And we still conceded too many opportunities.”

Our question to Kompany was therefore whether there is enough verticality in Anderlecht’s game. We got a counter question in response. “What do you see as verticality? That too little was played directly towards the opponent’s goal? That’s a bit like religion. Do we create chances or not? Have we made runs in the opponent’s back? Yes, Benito and Ciske have We made a lot of runs. We had a lot of speed in the race. There were enough situations. This is a team that is going to grow.”

There were enough situations, but we made the wrong choices

A colleague wanted to know why there was no more printing in the final quarter. “Didn’t you see any opportunities? I thought so, but I have to rewatch the game first. Maybe you’re right. Whether I’m satisfied? I’m only satisfied if we create many chances and don’t give them away.”

And whether there will be extra pressure on the Conference League match in Albania. “There is always pressure. A minute before the match against Union there was no pressure either. But from that ball rolling, there was pressure. I only look at what we have in our hands. There are only solutions and a plan. This is a team that has to grow step by step.”
