Jochen Körner: Tennis fans mourn the photographer

Legendary sports photos are rarely a question of staging, but rather of timing. And on May 10, 1992, Jochen Körner was spot on. “I was looking for a new perspective and went to the south stand,” said the photographer later.

Boris Becker and Michael Stich faced each other in the Rothenbaum semifinals – and Elmshorn didn’t give “Bobbele” the slightest chance at 6: 1, 6: 1.

Becker kept his humor and sank to his knees after a lost point. Begged, pleaded, folded his hands as if begging Stitch for mercy. He was kneeling on the other side of the net, shrugging his shoulders as if saying: Sorry, I’m too good for you today.

The picture was voted “Sports Photo of the Year”. Jochen Körner died on Friday at the age of 77.
